- What is Small Business University?
Small
Business University is a portal for entrepreneurs
and new publishers to learn from business and publishing
experts via teleclasses.
Registration
and handout distribution are handled through the
Internet. The class itself is presented, live, by
telephone, by a member of our faculty.
The Small Business University is a division of NewsBuzz,
Inc., and is located in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Its owner is an experienced instructional designer
and independent publisher.
2 - What is a teleclass?
Teleclasses
are live, interactive training classes conducted
over the telephone through a teleconferencing system.
3
- How Does It Work?
You
register for the classes
of your choice. You will be sent, via email, the
special teleconference telephone number to call
that will connect you with the instructor and the
rest of the students.
You
call the number three minutes or so before the start
of the class. You incur only the cost of a normal
long-distance telephone call, through your own telephone
company, plus the fee
for the class, which you paid when you registered
for the class.
The
instructor, sometimes along with a facilitator,
will conduct the class. Classes, depending upon
the topic, will consist of a combination of lecture
and learner/instructor interactivity.
4 - Do I need a computer?
You
need a computer to register and an email account.
You will receive your confirmation, a reminder,
and if applicable, handouts via email. At the time
of the class, however, you do not need a computer
and may concentrate on listening to the class on
the telephone.
Selected
classes may require that you be able to have access
to the Internet while you are on the phone. These
classes will be identified as such in the class
descriptions.
5 - Do phone charges apply?
Yes,
the teleclass number will be a long distance call
for you. This may be a good time to review your
long distance rates. We have found that Sam's
Club sells prepaid calling cards at excellent rates. You may also compare
long distance plans available in your area at LowerMyBills.com.
Another good option is OneSuite.com.
6 - What do I need to bring to class?
-
If you wish to take notes, make sure you have
a paper and pen handy.
- You
need to call from aquiet place free from background
noise (especially from such sources as co-workers,
family members, pets, TVs, and radios).
-
Use
a regular phone, and not a cell phone, Internet
phone, or speakerphone.
-
Turn
off the Call Waiting feature on your
phone. Call your phone company before the class
to find out what works on your system. For many
systems, you dial *70
(star 70) to temporarily disable the
Call Waiting feature.
-
If
you have a two-line phone, make sure the ringers
for the other line is turned off.
-
Remove
children from the room. Put pet(s) in another
room and close the door.
-
Check
to see if your Hold feature on the phone
plays music. If so, do not EVER place the phone
on hold during a class. Music will often play,
interrupting the class.
-
If
you have a mute button, use it during class
to make the class quieter so that everyone can
hear. The mute button is especially useful if
you need to cough or sneeze.
10 - What do I need to know before
I sign up?
The
classes are held via telephone, so you can use
any phone (except cell phones), anywhere in the
world, to call one central number where you will
be able to hear your instructor and your classmates.
Please follow all the instructions in #9 of this
FAQ.
We
anticipate that classes will fill up quickly, so
we suggest that if you find a class you want, you
register for it as soon as possible. For most classes,
there is a limit of 28 openings.
13
- Will I receive a reminder email?
Yes,
you will receive a reminder for the class the day
of the class. Please also mark your calendar when
you register for the class.
If
there are very few students registered for a class,
we may cancel the class and refund tuition.
To
ensure a full class, feel free to share news of
the class with people you know who may be interested
in registering.
15 -
What if I can't make the class?
As
with a "regular" university, if you are
absent from the class, there are no refunds.
No,
do not use cell phones or an Internet phone
during a teleclass. Experience
has shown they are not a good choice to use during
a teleclass. The distraction of the intermittent
noise affects the ability of all participants
to learn.
